i'm on a super tight budget. i messed up this sweet dell d600 i got for cheap- it has that dr. guard virus and i think its through. microcenter has a e-machine 15.6 for 299 rt. now so i'm going to get it. what do i put on it to PROTECT FOR SURE this time. everyone (esp. commision sales reps) have their own fav. and i'm a rank amateur and know nothing. any help or advice would be great.btw, the dell that got sacked was running firefox browser, avast, avira, and avg all at the same time and that dr. guard virus blew rt. through all of it and took over, what a shame, it was a nice machine for my needs, i guess it will make a good paper weight. unless i can fix it ?? or sell it for parts. thanks for any help and advice in advance

They install fine but when it comes to actually running the program they disappear. They appear in task manager for about 15 sec and then disappear.
The ones I have tried are: SpyBot, MalwareBytes, Ad-aware, TrendMicro Hijack, Iobit Security 360.
Have tried to run them in Safe Mode but my safe mode is disabled and just restarts the computer. Help, anybody. What to do. And please don't answer REFORMAT.
On my computer, the messages for vista spyware protection 2010 kept coming up- So I googled it and apparently the vista spyware- IS spyware. Ive tried to find a spyware removal thing, like spyware doctor- but you have to pay to actually get rid of the problem. I know it sounds stingy- but unfortunately I cant afford these £40+ registration fees that get rid of spyware. So, my question is what should I do, and does anyone know a good reliable spyware remover that is free? Or another way to get rid if it? Thankyou for all the answers!!!!

Please help me, my sister was using my computer and now it seems like it has a virus / spyware or whatever it is and its really annoying and I'm scared it might have stolen some of my passwords.
It is called av.exe - thats what appears on my task manager. I looked up some pages that say that help remove it but all of them imply downloading something and when i try to download it, it seems a bit too suspicious, like another spyware.
ALSO, MY ANTI VIRUS EXPIRED AND I DONT THINK I CAN BUY ANYTIME SOON.
i want to know if it will protect against spyware, malware rootkits ect.
I have been battling with a piece of Spyware for the last few days. It's strange because when I try to search on Yahoo, it will redirect the results to an ad page, but it will not do it on google. Just Yahoo. Plus it throws the random pop up in an extra tab.
I have tried to find it but can't find it. I've used the following:
MalwareBytes
SuperAntiSpyware
Spyware Terminator
Avast Free
Advanced System Care
IObit Security
I've also used two rootkit programs F-Secure Blacklight and Rootkit Buster.
Nothing can find it. System Restore doesn't go back far enough before I got this spyware.
The closest I've come to seeing it was running a boot time scan with Avast. There was a Trojan that wouldn't be deleted, repaired or moved to chest as it said the access flags don't match. I tried running boottime again to see if I could get the name, but now it won't show up.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
[this is the part where i get confused...correct me if i'm wrong]
MALWARE is a general term for any program that will harm or attack your computer, and under malware we have VIRUSES, ADWARE, SPYWARE which attacks the computer in different ways either via malicious programming, pop-up advertisements, programs disguised as safe programs etc.
[so for security and protection i have....]
malwarebytes anti malware installed which takes care of MALWARE
then i also have AVG antivirus free edition which takes care of VIRUSES AND SPYWARE (which, in my understanding is under the general term malware which is already covered by MALWAREBYTES)
[my questions.....]
is there a redundancy or overlap in the purpose and function of these programs? can i delete one of them and still get 100% protection from all threats?
can you suggest a protection scheme for my PC? (what programs to install etc)
I have heard of possible conflicts but can't find anything. I already have a anti-virus/spyware so I removed the Security Essentials freebie and was wondering if I should remove Defender. I don't think it does any good anyways, but not sure.
if not what are the difference?
I have had viruses/spyware problems 3 times this year. The first time I paid McAfee something like $89.99 to take control of my computer to fix it. The first person I was with was very thorough. We were on line for over an hour. He thought it was fixed; it wasn't. I called back and went through the process 3 more times with 3 different people. They had records of each session. Finally, I hired someone local to fix the computer. McAfee did refund the $89.99 or whatever that figure was. I still have McAfee until 2012. If I have their protection, why do they charge? Also, why do people put viruses on computers? Are they professionals or are they just mean people?
Where would i find spyware that i can get off the internet thats inexpensive and reliable?
This 2010 specially.
